Capel Iwan Archive 2004

02 - Pobl a Digwyddiadua - People and Events

This is part of a series of web pages, assembled by Jim Batten, from files provided by Mr. Ieuan James.
It is based on a CD ROM, prepared by Capel Iwan PTA, to mark the retirement of Mr. James in 2004, and celebrate his twenty eight years as head teacher of Capel Iwan School.

Use this link to get back to the list of sections.

There is also a spreadsheet file (Capel Iwan Primary School History.xls) which is mainly to do with the school, but contains notes relating to some of the photos in this section. A summary of these notes being used in the file-name of each image, where possible.

The CD sleeve included the following note -

An acknowledgement must be made to the late Miss. Eilwen Jenkins, (a former teacher at both Parcylan and Capel Iwan schools) who initially assembled and annotated most of the older photos in 1988, and thanks to Mr. Iwan Jenkins for allowing her work to be used on the CD.

The next photograph is of a group of 49 men and two boys, assembled outside Capel Iwan chapel vestry.
A builder’s bill from Sam Jones (of Penryhol) indicates that the vestry porch was not built until 1907; therefore, this photo pre-dates 1907.
Mr W. Evans, the schools headmaster from 1891 to 1923 can be seen, second from the left, second row back.

Band group 22a
The band members on the right would appear to be members of the Dyffryn Bargod Temperance Band (due to their resemblance to a 1909 photo published in “Llangeler Parish, A Century of Photographs”).
This photo could well have been taken at a Temperance meeting, as most of the men are wearing a ribbon on their lapels; the equivalent of “wearing the sash”, a marker worn after making a promise not to drinkalcohol; “taking the pledge”.

“Llangeler Parish, A Century of Photographs” was published in June 2000 by the Llangeler Community Council, edited by Alun L. Jones and printed by Gomer Press. There is no ISBN number.

As it stated on the CD, this ... is not, by any means, a "finished article", as it is hoped that future editions ... will include additional photos, memories, articles and research; which are invited for contribution by any member of the community.

Please eMail me any further images and / or information which I will then try to include in the web pages.
